🔗 Middle East conflict: Several sources to help our readers better understand what’s going on between Israel and the Palestinians.
🇯🇵 Standing room only: A Japanese city has banned people from walking on escalators, in a bid to prevent accidents. Could other places follow suit?
🧬 Veggie genes: Researchers have identified genes in vegetarians which may explain why they opt for plant-based diets.
Around 10,000 native oysters have been released onto a human-made reef the size of a football pitch, located off England’s northeast coast. The landmark conservation initiative, headed up by the UK’s Wild Oysters Project, aims to restore the threatened, native species and support marine life. The molluscs will also help remove pollutants from the coastal waters.
🔗 Understanding the conflict
On Saturday morning, Hamas - the Palestinian paramilitary group - launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, by land, sea and air. Thousands of Israelis and Palestinians have been wounded and killed since then.
At our editorial meeting this morning, we had a long discussion about how best to cover this story. While our format of concise, 300-word summaries of the day’s top stories is great in some ways, it does also have its limitations when it comes to addressing such a vast, complex and charged story.
That’s why, for today, we’ve decided to link out to other sources which have the space to address the complexities and nuances of what has happened, both over the weekend and in the decades prior:
What we know about the Hamas attack and Israel’s response (The New York Times)
The Israel-Hamas war: No matter who loses, Iran wins (The Conversation)
We’ve spent time over the weekend reading about and reflecting on this difficult news, and we’re conscious that some of you may be feeling a lot of pain. We are, as always, here for our readers.
