The Know Daily - Friday 10th March 2023

šŸ“š A love letter to local libraries

Friday Edition āˆ™ Read in 5m 18s āˆ™ Listening to Diana Ross

Dear readers,

I hope youā€™ve all had a great week, and that the snow (and rain/hail/sleet!) hasnā€™t been too heavy wherever you are. Bad weather always makes me want to curl up with a good book, which is why todayā€™s read - a love letter to our local libraries - is very apt.

Libraries are an incredible public resource and donā€™t just provide people with free reads but also with a sense of community. I hope that our guide inspires you to dust off your membership card - or take out a new one!

This week, we also marked International Womenā€™s Day - which is why in todayā€™s Weekend Treats, youā€™ll find five handpicked recs for women-centred content (some of which were suggested by members of our community). Thatā€™s once youā€™ve caught up on the biggest headlines of the week, of course!

Have a great weekend,

Love,

šŸ“š A love letter to our local libraries

Thereā€™s something almost magical about libraries. As a child, they felt like places of endless inspiration, containing keys for unlocking other realms, going back in time and trying out supernatural powers. As an adult, libraries remain a place of both escape and shelter - even if the pressures of life mean you can no longer get lost in a book for hours on end.

Making the most of our libraries in this day and age is crucial to ensuring they remain open for generations to come. Thatā€™s why weā€™ve written a guide to all the free, fantastic resources that are on offer at your local library. We hope it inspires you to dust off your membership card!

The list, which spans various countries including Italy, the UK and Austria, also features lesser known authors, meaning youā€™re guaranteed to find something youā€™ve not read before.

šŸ“ø Check out: Still Present, a photojournalism project from AnalogFolk thatā€™s designed to remind the world of the real purpose of IWD. The campaign has collated photographs from past protests around the world to showcase the ongoing struggle for womenā€™s rights and celebrate the determination of those who fought before us.

šŸŽ„Ā Watch: the teamā€™s favourite films from women directors that are currently available on streaming platforms: The Power of the Dog (Jane Campion, Netflix), ToveĀ (Zaida Bergroth, iPlayer), The Macaluso SistersĀ (Emma Dante, iPlayer), Little WomenĀ (Greta Gerwig, Netflix), StrayĀ (Elizabeth Lo, Netflix), The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, Prime Video).
