🤗 Your Quarterly Hug!

Recs for a long weekend, a merch giveaway + more

Friends Hug GIF by MOODMAN

Hi friends! Welcome to your first Quarterly Hug of 2024 🥰

By the time you read this, we’ll be off enjoying the bank holiday weekend - binge-watching Succession most likely, given the rainy-ish forecast in London over the next few days ☔ The optimist in us hopes the sun could still come out strong and, if it does, we’ll be dipping into this bumper list of ways to spend a long weekend.

We hope 2024 has brought you lots of good things so far. At The Know, these first three months have been a whirlwind, with lots of big-picture thinking about how we can reach even more people who would love what we do. And it’s directly down to your support that we can do this. The media industry is pretty tough right now, with big outlets such as Vice being hit by layoffs and smaller indie publications such as gal-dem closing their doors altogether.

So we want to say a massive thank you for helping The Know to keep going, and for playing your role in helping people feel better about the news 🫶 This Quarterly Hug is our way of showing gratitude - so if there’s anything you’d like to see from us in future editions, drop us a note here! And we’ll be back in your inboxes as usual after Monday.

All love,

Lynn, Esther, Lily and Freya x
The team at The Know

We’ll announce the winner when we’re back after the break 😎 And remember - all of our friends automatically get five extra entries into every single giveaway we run! We’ve just launched a new one with Unyoked - offering one lucky reader a two-night stay for two in a private cabin in the wild - and you can check out some seriously dreamy pics of it here.

As you know, in every Friday newsletter we share some uplifting stories from the week just gone. And while we’re off on holiday today, we didn’t want to stop you from starting the weekend with some positivity - so here are three stories we loved this week 👇

🇧🇷 Brazil and France launched a $1bn investment programme to protect the Amazon rainforest, pledging to work together to stop deforestation by 2030.

☀️ A French town is installing a canopy of solar panels over its cemetery, in a first-of-its-kind scheme that will prevent the land from flooding while also distributing energy to local residents.

🦔 A trailblazing new project will use AI to sort through images of hedgehogs in the wild, so that conservationists can better understand their numbers and ensure the spiky species’ long-term survival.

And a reminder - we’re always sharing good news over on Instagram 😊

How will you be spending the bank holiday?
I’m taking my first holiday in a looong time with my husband and son, and planning on doing the least amount of activity possible! I’m finally reading Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (late to the game, I know!).

When I get home, I’m going to plant these seeds in my little garden in the hope I can attract some bees and butterflies, and attempt to enter my domestic goddess era by making this galette.

How will you be spending the bank holiday?
By doing lots of relaxing cooking. I’ve spent a slightly ridiculous amount of time researching the best lamb recipes for Sunday lunch. Torn between this one with garden herbs and this kofta recipe that gives serious summer vibes - input appreciated!

I’ll also be watching The Delinquents at the cinema, reading Alice Munro’s Runaway and probably putting off important life admin for another weekend.

How will you be spending the bank holiday?
I’m heading home to spend some time with family and friends - I just can’t wait! I’m planning on bringing Claire Keegan’s short story collection Antarctica for the train journey (I read Small Things Like These over Christmas and loved it).

With the clocks changing on Sunday, I feel I can finally lean into spring. I’ve got into seasonal cooking in recent weeks - this guide has been a lifesaver.

How will you be spending the bank holiday?
Getting out of London to spend some time with my family. Long walks, food and films (I've been wanting to watch Shoplifters for ages). I especially can't wait for my mum's roast dinner on Sunday, nothing compares. I might have a go at making this Nigella easter egg nest cake!

I could even finally get round to some painting, too. It's been far far too long since I've indulged in my favourite hobby.
