šĀ The Lockdown Files
Thousands of leaked WhatsApp messages sent to and from Matt Hancock at the height of the pandemic have suggested the then-health secretary ignored expert advice on care home testing.
Where is this information coming from?
More than 100,000 WhatsApps were obtained for The Telegraph by lockdown-critical journalist Isabel Oakeshott, who co-wrote Hancockās Pandemic Diaries memoir. The messages, which span the years of the pandemic, offer an insightĀ into the government's decision-making process during that period.
What have we learnt about care homes?
The messages suggest that the former health secretary - who was last seen crooning Ed Sheeran on Iām a Celebrity - was told by chief medical officer Chris Whitty in April 2020 that there should be testing for āall going into care homesā. However, Hancock told an aide that the move āmuddies the watersā, and instead introduced mandatory testing just for those coming in from hospitals.
What other revelations did the messages contain?
The investigation also contains claims that officials sent a courier to Jacob Rees-Moggās family home with a Covid test for one of his children, during a national shortage. They also show Hancock telling former chancellor George Osborne, then editor of the Evening Standard, āI WANT TO HIT MY TARGET!ā as he pushed for favourable news coverage.
How has Hancock responded?
The MP for West Suffolk has denied the ādistorted accountā, with a spokesperson alleging that the messages have been āspun to fit an anti-lockdown agendaā. He is understood to be considering all legal options in response to the leak.
The Telegraph is planning to reveal further messages and details in the coming days. Separately, a public inquiry on the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic is already underway and due to begin hearing evidence in June.

šĀ On your marks
Sport England has launched a new campaign to tackle the exercise āenjoyment gapā, with new research showing that 2.4 million fewer women than men enjoy physical activity.
What might be influencing the gap?
Sport Englandās This Girl Can campaign group has estimated that 5.8 million women in England enjoy sport and exercise, compared to 8.2 million men. Safety concerns appear to be a key factor in explaining whatās been dubbed the āexercise enjoyment gapā, with almost a quarter of women worried about sexual harassment when taking part in physical activity.
What else might be going on?
Researchers also found that a fear of judgement is preventing more women from getting into sport, with 41% of the women surveyed expressing concerns over not being fit enough. The rising cost of living emerged as another barrier, with 37% of women saying that it negatively impacts their ability to be active. Many of the men surveyed had similar anxieties around exercise.
Whatās being done to counteract this?
Enjoyment is one of the biggest motivators for people getting into fitness. Bearing that in mind, Sport England has launched a new campaign specifically aimed at making sport more satisfying for women, working with sporting organisations across the sector. This Girl Can With You says that activities for women and girls must be āsocial, suitable, self-affirming and safeā.
