Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of the Congo has become the world’s first key biodiversity site because of its “ecological integrity”. Covering 4,000 km2 of rainforest and home to various endangered mammals such as forest elephants and western lowland gorillas, the park is rarely visited by humans and plays a major role in climate regulation and carbon storage.
