Happy Friday! Hope you’ve all had wonderful weeks ❤️
Mine got off to a good start with the extra hour in bed on Sunday, but that well-rested feeling has worn off as the reality of 4pm-ish sunsets sinks in. I’ve always struggled with the nights drawing in – I’m very much a warm weather person, but I think even if you’re not, losing an hour of daylight in the afternoons can leave you feeling out of sorts.
It can be really tempting to hunker down indoors this time of year – but I’ve finally figured out that for me personally, the best mood boost is to get outside. Volunteering can be a great way to do this, which is why for this week’s edition, our wonderful staff writer Hanna has some advice on how to get started.

🤝 Get into volunteering
Narrow down what you’re interested in
Volunteering isn’t confined to food banks (although that’s always a great option). Try looking for ways to integrate your passions into volunteering. If you’re into cinema, film festivals often need help to run events – the BFI is on the hunt for volunteers every year for the London Film Festival. If you’re sporty, volunteering at marathons – like these upcoming ones in Manchester and Brighton – look like fun.
Look at your favourite charities
Make sure to look directly on charities’ websites, as they’ll often list opportunities on there. If you want to represent a cause you’re passionate about, these ambassador roles at Barnardo’s, The Fertility Network and monkey sanctuary Wild Futures are worth a look.
I don't know what I want!
That’s okay! There are plenty of online databases that list any and all opportunities in the UK. Reach Volunteering, Doit, Volunteer Match and Volunteering Matters are all good places to start.
