Apple pulled advanced data protection (ADP) for UK customers – let’s break down what that means.

What’s advanced data protection?
It’s an opt-in data security tool that’s meant to give Apple device users a secure way to protect the data – such as health information and passwords – in their iCloud accounts. iCloud data is already subject to standard encryption, meaning that Apple can access your data. The extra protection comes from the fact that ADP has end-to-end encryption, meaning the data is "scrambled" on Apple’s servers, so neither the company nor hackers can read sensitive information – only the user can. ADP also takes the encryption a step further with additional layers of protection on your photos, notes and voice memos than standard encryption.

Why’s it going away?
The move comes as British security officials have reportedly requested Apple to allow them to access their global user data when needed, through the power of the Investigatory Powers Act. This lets law enforcement ask tech companies to provide them with communications in secret. Instead of complying with the request, Apple chose to withdraw the service altogether.

What does this mean for my devices?
Cybersecurity experts have said it’ll make UK Apple users’ personal data less secure. However, 14 types of sensitive data will still remain end-to-end encrypted by default. If you’re in the UK and didn’t opt-in to ADP, you won't see any changes. Your iCloud data will still be protected by standard encryption, but you can no longer apply to have end-to-end encryption. Those who already have ADP will lose it at an unconfirmed date in the future. Amidst these changes, here’s some helpful tips on how to look after your own data protection.
