The NFL managed to host a net-zero energy Super Bowl by offsetting carbon emissions and recycling hundreds of tons of waste from the big game, from rubbish to reusable materials. Organisers even found new homes for leftover items like fence mesh and carpets, helping reduce the event’s environmental footprint. That’s what you call a full-time win!

👩⚕️ Endometriosis awareness and advancements
It’s Endometriosis Awareness Month – a condition affecting around one in 10 women. While it remains widely misunderstood and often underdiagnosed, there are growing signs that greater awareness is beginning to drive progress.
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, often around the pelvis. It can cause severe period pain, pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fatigue and sometimes fertility difficulties. Symptoms vary widely, which is one reason it can be hard to identify quickly. There’s no single cure, and treatment depends on symptoms and personal circumstances. Options can include pain relief, hormonal treatments and, in some cases, surgery.
Why does diagnosis take so long?
For years, the gold standard for diagnosis has been laparoscopic surgery – a procedure to look inside the pelvis. That has meant many people wait years before getting clear answers. Symptoms are also sometimes dismissed as “normal period pain”, which can delay referrals to specialists. The result is an average diagnostic delay in the UK of around nine years.
Are there any advancements?
There are some signs of progress:
Less invasive testing – Research suggests that specialist ultrasound techniques may be able to identify certain forms of endometriosis without surgery, potentially speeding up diagnosis and access to treatment.
Rethinking surgery – Clinicians are increasingly weighing whether surgery is necessary in every suspected case, with more emphasis on individualised care.
Policy attention – The UK government has renewed its Women’s Health Strategy, which includes commitments to improve awareness, reduce diagnostic delays and strengthen support.
These changes don’t solve everything, but they signal a shift towards earlier recognition and more tailored care.
What’s the wider impact?
Endometriosis affects more than physical health. Living with long-term pain and uncertainty can take a toll on mental wellbeing, work and relationships. A lot of people describe years of not feeling heard before getting a diagnosis. Greater awareness can make a big difference though. For example, the BAFTA-winning film This Is Endometriosis has brought personal stories to a broader audience, helping to validate experiences that have often been minimised.

🌍 A senior United Nations expert has set out a plan for a more redistributive global economy to tackle inequality and environmental pressures.
The bigger story: Olivier De Schutter says governments focus too heavily on economic growth that mainly benefits the wealthiest, so is calling for a new agenda that prioritises public services and fairness, funded partly through stronger taxes on wealth and financial assets. He plans to publish a roadmap in April and wants a permanent UN body on inequality to help guide governments on alternative economic approaches. However, some economists and policymakers argue that moving away from growth risks slowing investment and job creation, and say the proposals may be politically difficult to implement.
💎 Chimpanzees may share our fascination with gems, after researchers found they quickly picked out crystals from piles of ordinary stones and spent hours inspecting them. The study suggests the attraction to sparkly things could date back millions of years in our shared evolutionary past.

It’s World Book Day, so I just had to tell you about this one! It’s a fab read, but I actually think it makes an even better gift as it’s such a unique format (I’m giving no more away than that) and so beautifully presented. If you’ve got a girlfriend who loves a handwritten letter, then this will be right up her street. Oh, and the story is pretty great too 😂
