NUMBER OF THE DAY

2.1m

The width of London’s second narrowest home, going for over £1m (wild!).

✈️ Airports on the move

Runways have been hitting the headlines recently as major airports push to expand.

Why is this in the news?
Two of the UK’s biggest airports are looking to grow. Gatwick’s northern runway has received government development consent, clearing the way for construction, while Heathrow has submitted “shovel-ready” plans for its long-debated third runway. Ministers have framed both as part of a wider plan to modernise infrastructure and boost connectivity – though each comes with its own planning hurdles and local debates.

What would the benefits be?
Supporters say more runway capacity will make air travel smoother, cut delays and create new routes for passengers and businesses. Gatwick’s project alone is expected to generate thousands of jobs and billions in economic value over time. Airports are also regional growth hubs – supporting tourism, retail and hospitality, as well as drawing investment to nearby towns. For travellers, it could mean greater choice, fewer cancellations and a better chance of snagging affordable fares.

What’s the other side?
Expansion inevitably raises environmental and community questions. More flights mean more carbon emissions unless offset by greener technology, and local residents often worry about noise and traffic. Both Heathrow and Gatwick have said they’ll include measures to cut emissions and invest in cleaner transport links, but campaigners argue that the balance between growth and sustainability still needs careful scrutiny. Planning authorities are now weighing those trade-offs as part of final approvals.

The upshot.
Gatwick’s expansion has officially been signed off, marking a big milestone for UK aviation. Heathrow’s third runway, meanwhile, is still awaiting full approval.
