A 100-hour non-stop DJ marathon live from East London kicks off today. The event aims to raise donations for the Zero Gravity Fund, an initiative that provides academic and career support for students in low-opportunity areas 🎶

NUMBER OF THE DAY

3.5 mm

The size of the world’s tiniest pacemaker.

📰 Print power

There’s a renewed interest in independent magazines among young Brits.

Tell me more.
While mass market magazines appear to be on the decline, luxury and independent titles are flourishing. An exhibition about The Face, a trailblazing magazine that championed youth culture, attracted nearly 30k visitors in its opening month at the National Portrait Gallery, 14% of whom were under 25. What’s more, fashion-focused magazines like Grazia, have seen its circulation rise 46% year-on-year. A recent report found that the independent publishing sector is thriving, and that trend has grown over recent years.

Why?
Similar to point and shoot cameras and vinyl records, indie magazines are enjoying a revival due to a nostalgia drive by younger generations. “Print is where the excitement lies,” according to the founder of magazine shop magCulture. Gen Z want something that’s “tangible and collectible”, she added. In short, reading print magazines is “an intimate, tactical experience" that can’t be replicated digitally.

Why are we telling this story now?
After a 2-year hiatus, iconic magazine i-D is back on UK newsstands. After its parent company Vice filed for bankruptcy in 2023, model Karlie Kloss acquired it, calling it “an extraordinary piece of fashion history” she didn’t want to see disappear.

If you love print magazines, there’s plenty of ways to support the industry from purchasing copies, signing up to their newsletters and suggesting libraries to stock them.
