👩‍💻 The job hunt factsheet

The number of job hunters keeps rising and with the autumn budget just around the corner, the labour market is a priority for lots of people.

So what’s happening with the job market?
New figures from KPMG and REC show the steepest rise in candidates seeking jobs for nearly five years. At the same time, permanent job recruitment has edged up slightly, suggesting that while competition remains high, those who are successfully hired may be stepping into roles that offer more stability and security.

Let’s roll it back.
The past five years have reshaped how people think about work. The pandemic led to layoffs and furloughs, followed by a hiring boom and then a slowdown as inflation and interest rates put pressure on businesses. Basically, there have been a lot of ups and downs over the past few years. Alongside this, rapid advances in technology – from AI-driven recruitment systems to the rise of remote work – have completely changed how people apply for and land jobs.

What’s the impact?
For jobseekers, it’s a mixed picture. On one hand, competition can feel fierce and applicants often say their CVs disappear into online black holes, never hearing from recruiters. On the other hand, employers are more open to transferable skills, flexible backgrounds and career changes than ever before. For many, this means opportunities exist in places that weren’t traditionally on the radar.

What’s being done about it?
Government funding pledges and skills initiatives aim to make it easier to retrain or upskill. At the same time, companies are experimenting with more transparent hiring processes, shorter application stages and employee referral programmes. While there’s no quick fix, the shift suggests a broader recognition that the system itself needs to evolve.

Looking to start your own search?
It can feel like a big task, but the resources out there that you can use to empower yourself are better than ever. A few good places to start:
