An underwater light that boosts coral reef restoration has been developed by scientists. By attracting zooplankton to coral, they’re able to access greater amounts of food, making them “more likely to be resilient” against environmental changes.

Advertising in space may be a thing of the future, but there have been calls to ban the practice before it's even properly begun.

Tell me more.
Astronomers are calling on nations to ban commercial advertising in the sky, which can be seen from the ground without needing to use a telescope. Last year, one company tested prototype satellites using lasers to form logos and images for advertisers as more private businesses are exploring this new form of marketing to the public. Global digital marketing is predicted to reach nearly $800bn by 2026, and has risen by 140% on social media in the last 5 years. But adverts in the sky over an entire urban area could have an even bigger reach, even moreso if shared online due to their initial novelty.

Why are we telling this story now?
Whilst space advertising is banned by law in the US, the American Astronomical Society said there’s “growing concern” that other countries could take up the practice, so are calling on nations worldwide to follow suit. It also comes during a time of increased interest in space exploration by private companies and consequently more shiny debris in Earth’s lower orbit that make observations of the cosmos challenging enough already.

What’s the reaction been?
One company’s plans to promote an energy drink in space received strong criticism on social media and the project was ultimately scrapped. Nevertheless, astronomers have said “the lure and commercial value will prompt somebody to try it” beyond initial tests, so they hope acting in advance will help protect nighttime skies from additional light pollution.
