🥚 Protein power | 🏗️ Building Britain | 🌕 Moon marvelling
Five football teams in England are commissioning official poems for their clubs as part of a new initiative by the National Literacy Trust to encourage youth literacy. The ‘A Poem for your Club’ scheme will see participating clubs receive their own poet-in-residence and run writing workshops for fans, involving the local community with poem creation.
🥚 Protein power
Brits are increasingly incorporating more protein in their diets, according to a new survey.
Tell me more.
Half of respondents to a recent report said they’d increased their protein intake over the past year, whilst that figure rose to two-thirds for those aged 16 to 34. What’s more, online grocer Ocado said searches for high-protein foods like Greek yoghurt and chicken breasts have doubled over the last two years, and plant-based proteins, such as chickpeas and lentils, have also seen a big rise.
Why the interest?
Social media is reportedly a big factor, especially for younger people. Almost 50% of Gen Z cited Instagram and TikTok as inspiration to get more protein in their diets, and 35% of millennials reported the same. Ocado noted a 97% increase in cottage cheese purchases, following a resurgence of its use in recipes shared on TikTok. Plus, popular influencers like nutritionists Emily English and Kylie Sakaida – both of whom have audiences of millions – share high-protein recipes and emphasise the importance of having natural sources of protein in your diet.
Anything else I should know?
Although protein was once mostly popular with bodybuilders, in recent years it's become a healthy staple for anyone, said a spokesperson from Ocado. Attitudes have largely changed regarding protein and now it's seen as vital for good health, rather than a tool for building muscle. Plus, consumers have become more conscious of where their protein comes from and favour more “natural, whole-food options”, over highly processed protein bars or shakes.
