Happy Friday! I hope you’re enjoying the start of spring as much as I am. This time of year is all about new beginnings, so it’s only natural that the thought of change is on many of our minds.

£372m: How much e-cigarette manufacturer Juul Labs has agreed to pay to settle claims by six US states, after being accused of targeting teenagers.
900 tonnes: The amount of rubbish that Rome will send to Amsterdam every week to be incinerated, in an attempt to deal with the Italian capital’s trash problem.
£190k: Donations received so far to help rebuild a charity allotment after vandals destroyed it using salt. Essex woman Carly Burd had been growing food to help people struggling with the cost-of-living.

🇮🇪 US President Joe Biden addressed the Irish Parliament yesterday as part of a four-day visit coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
🤝 Iran’s embassy in Saudi Arabia reopened on Wednesday for the first time in seven years as part of plans to ease a long-standing rivalry between the countries.
🏴 The Scottish government confirmed that it will launch a legal challenge to Westminster’s decision to block its gender reform bill.
CULTURE
🍿 The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke opening weekend records, taking an incredible $377m at the box office worldwide - despite largely negative reviews from critics.
🌿 Germany will allow adults to grow and consume recreational cannabis privately or through non-profit members’ clubs by the end of the year - scaling back previous plans to allow the sale of cannabis in shops or pharmacies nationwide.
🏵️ Seven sites in the UK and its overseas territories - including York city centre and Birkenhead Park (pictured below) - have been put forward for Unesco World Heritage status consideration.
WORK & INNOVATION
🔬 US scientists have developed a new technique that could help diagnose Parkinson’s disease before symptoms show.
🏨 A black job applicant said he received a “disingenuous” apology from The Ritz hotel in London after he was told that “Afro-style” hair was banned among staff - Jerelle Jules said the document indicated “institutional racism”, which the hotel denies.
🗣️ A Kuwaiti media outlet unveiled an AI-generated virtual news presenter - and there are plans for “Fedha” to read out bulletins on the Kuwait News Twitter account.

👏 The World Health Organisation certified Azerbaijan and Tajikistan as malaria-free last month, while Ghana became the first country to approve a new malaria vaccine described as a “world-changer”.
🇳🇿 New Zealand made history by achieving gender equality in its cabinet for the first time, less than a week after former PM Jacinda Ardern left politics.
🔌 UK sales of electric vehicles reached a record monthly high in March, representing 18.6% year-on-year growth.

This week’s spotlight is shining on Georgina (@finding_marbles_) from the Lake District, who is part of The Know community.
A visual communication graduate, Georgina spent 13 years working with creatives on ad campaigns, films, exhibitions and interior design projects. Her stressful job began to affect her mental health, leading her to feel burned out and keen to reevaluate how she should be working and living. Now, Georgina helps others with similar mental health challenges through her blog, Finding Marbles.
