šŗšø Donald in the dock (again)
Donald Trump attacked his political opponents in an angry speech on Tuesday night, just hours after pleading not guilty to 37 federal charges in a Miami courtroom.
Whatās the story?
The former US president is accused of unlawfully keeping classified documents - some of which related to nuclear programmes - at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after he left office, and lying to officials attempting to recover them.
āEach of those counts contains penalties that include substantial fines and the possibility of years in prison,ā explained the BBCās North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher.
Why is this such a big deal?
Trump is the first former US president to face federal criminal charges. Itās also his second courtroom appearance in recent months. In April, he pleaded not guilty to state charges in New York relating to a purported hush-money payment.
What did Trump say in his speech?
He spoke at a New Jersey fundraiser for just over half an hour, during which he lashed outat a range of people including President Joe Biden and the prosecutor in the Miami legal case.
He described the charges against him as a āpolitical persecutionā. āToday, we witnessed the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country,ā he said.
Is there anything else I should know?
In his speech, Trump also touched on the classified documents found in Bidenās possession from his time as vice president. But while both Biden and former VP Mike Pence were found to have held classified documents, āboth men cooperated with federal law enforcement and returned those recordsā, The Independent explained.
What happens next?
Trump was allowed to leave court without conditions or travel restrictions. āLegal experts say it could be a year or more before a trial takes place,ā Sky News reported.
