✈️ 24-hour holidays
Travellers looking for lower-cost getaways are embracing the latest travel trend – extreme day trips.
What are they?
Extreme day trips are holidays where you travel abroad for one day. In the morning you fly out, spend the day exploring and head back home at night. In recent years, the practice has soared in popularity, with online groups dedicated to sharing recommendations and deals flourishing, reported Metro. Searches for extreme day tripping also rose by 1,182% in the latter half of 2024.
What’s the appeal?
They’re more affordable than your typical multi-day holiday. Flying abroad for 24 hours is often cheaper than planning a UK holiday, avid day-trippers told the BBC. The increasing cost of public transport in the UK is a big factor in this reasoning, with rail fares rising by nearly 5% in 2025 so far. Overall, it’s an efficient, budget-friendly way to not only explore new cities but also break up routines without leaving home for too long, they added.
What’s the downside?
It requires a lot of advanced planning to pull off, incidents like flight delays can easily derail trips. Critics have also raised that the practice isn’t environmentally-friendly, given that flying is responsible for 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. While it may not be a comprehensive solution, some keen extreme day-trippers have made efforts to offset their carbon footprint by donating to eco-charities every time they fly. What’s more, they’ve also pointed out that it’s less impactful than cruising, which has seen even more growth over the past few years.
