WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

👩‍⚕️ Hospitals embracing new tech, the first trillionaire (on paper), a peace deal is reached + a very cheeky bike ride

Conservationists on the Isle of Man have spent the past decade trying to lure puffins back to a tiny island using an unusual tactic: dozens of plastic puffin decoys and speakers playing puffin calls. And the plan appears to be working. Real puffins are being spotted around the Calf of Man, with some even gathering nesting material for baby pufflings, raising hopes that the charismatic seabirds could soon make a permanent return to their former home.

👩‍⚕️ AI in hospitals

Artificial intelligence has become one of healthcare’s hottest topics, and a new report suggests clinicians are embracing the technology faster than hospitals are prepared for.

How are hospitals using AI?
Despite all the futuristic headlines, most AI applications are surprisingly ordinary. Clinicians are using the technology to help summarise patient notes, organise information, schedule appointments and sift through large amounts of data. In some areas, AI is being used to support image analysis and clinical decision-making, although doctors remain responsible for final decisions.

According to the Philips Future Health Index 2026, 71% of the thousands of clinicians across 10 countries surveyed said AI had improved workflow efficiency, while 57% reported better access to patient data across care teams. Half said AI had increased their capacity to see more patients. Researchers estimate that the time savings are equivalent to more than 16 working days per year.

What are the benefits for patients?
Supporters argue that AI helps ease some of the pressure facing overstretched health systems. If doctors spend less time on paperwork and have better work-life balance, they have more time for patients, leading to faster diagnoses and shorter waiting times. The report also found that a third of clinicians said AI had helped spot or prevent possible medical mistakes.

What are the concerns?
The biggest issue is training, with three-quarters of clinicians saying training for AI-enabled tools is unavailable or inadequate. There are also concerns about becoming too dependent on the technology with around 44% worrying about losing clinical skills through over-reliance on AI, while a third said their role is changing faster than they are comfortable with.

Questions also remain around privacy, regulation and accountability. In the UK, the Medical Protection Society recently warned that doctors and NHS organisations could potentially face legal claims if AI-assisted decisions lead to harm, as current laws have not kept pace with the rapidly advancing technology.

What does this mean for the NHS?
The NHS is already using AI for tasks such as medical imaging and note-taking, and more than 500,000 staff are set to gain access to AI tools. Early trials suggest the technology could save workers around 43 minutes a day, but experts say better training and clearer rules will be needed as its use expands.

Where does healthcare AI go from here?
The report suggests AI is evolving from being simply another tool to becoming more of a digital teammate. Clinicians expect it to take over repetitive tasks, but not to substitute human judgement. More than 80% said AI will never replace the relationships clinicians build with patients. Rather than robot doctors, the future looks more like AI helping healthcare professionals work faster and more efficiently so they can focus on providing the best possible care for patients.

🙋‍♀️ TRIVIA TIME

Which became the first female-fronted band to headline the UK's biggest rock festival this weekend?

A) Evanescence
B) Paramore
C) Linkin Park

Got it? Answer at the bottom.

💰 Money Monday: The world’s first-ever trillionaire has entered the chat – Elon Musk’s wealth passed the $1tn mark following SpaceX’s stock market debut.

  • The bigger story: SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq index at a valuation of around $2.2tn, with strong investor demand pushing its share price well above its offer price on the first day of trading. Musk owns about 42% of the company, meaning the jump in SpaceX’s value added hundreds of billions of dollars to his net worth, which is also tied to his holdings in Tesla. While the milestone has reignited debate about wealth inequality, most of Musk’s fortune exists on paper through shares rather than cash.

🦫 Eight beavers have managed to solve a decades-old flooding issue that’s been affecting public transport.

Lately I’ve been noticing that, even though I feel like I’m always taking photos whilst on holiday, I hardly ever actually take the time to look through them. So, I’ve been trying to create photobooks at the end of each trip. They’re such a lovely way to relive a trip, and I genuinely think they make the memories feel more special (plus they look far chicer on a coffee table than another folder on your phone).
