🇺🇸 Trump charged - again
Donald Trump has been indicted on state racketeering and conspiracy charges in the US state of Georgia, relating to his alleged efforts to illegally overturn the 2020 election.
Tell me more.
The 98-page indictment, handed down by a state grand jury in Atlanta on Monday night, outlines a widespread conspiracy to try and illegally change the outcome of the 2020 election. The former US president and 18 of his associates - including his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani - have all been charged with racketeering, which carries up to 20 years in prison.
The case, brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, relies on laws most often used to target organised crime groups. “These are the fourth set of criminal charges brought against Mr Trump in recent months, but it is the first time a former American president faces charges once used to convict mob bosses like John Gotti and Vincent Gigante,” said the BBC.
Remind me what happened in 2020?
“Trump narrowly lost to Joe Biden in Georgia and his lawyers, including Giuliani, made false claims of election fraud,” explained Sky News. “Audio of a call by Trump to Georgia's secretary of state also emerged in January 2021 in which he suggested election officials could ‘find’ the votes he needed to win.”
The former president has previously denied the claims and said that they are politically motivated.
So what happens next?
Trump has been given until noon on 25 August to surrender to police. He is currently facing three other prosecutions relating to alleged election fraud in Washington, withholding classified documents in Florida and making hush money payments in New York.
It is unclear how all these cases could conclude before the election on 5 November 2024, where Trump remains by far the most popular candidate in the Republican field.
