Happy Friday, readers!

This working week has been a relatively short one for me, as I got back from an eye-opening trip to the Czech Republic on Monday night. I spent four days in Děčƭn (a city north of Prague) with my partner and his family, exploring the city where my soon-to-be father-in-law spent the first 18 years of his life.

In 1968, he was able to leave the country during the Prague Spring - and went on holiday to England. When the Soviet Union sent tanks into the Czech Republic to crush the protests, he decided it would be safer to stay in the UK and claimed asylum here (later becoming a professor of neuro-oncology!). He rarely goes back, so it felt like a privilege to see the places that shaped his early life and to learn more about his experiences during this turbulent time.

This week, I’m wondering whether you’ve ever been on a meaningful, perspective-shifting trip like this one? If you have, I’d love to hear about it - feel free to reply to this email if you have a story to share!

In this edition, you’ll find our usual roundup of this week’s biggest global stories, our news quiz and some culture recs, to help you start your weekend feeling informed and hopeful.

Have a good one!
