WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

📵 Social media reform
🇬🇧🇺🇸 UK-US tariff agreement
🌼 Plant boom in cities

The humble white t-shirt just got a major upgrade. Designer Síofra Caherty spent two years perfecting it – from non-genetically modified Greek cotton to ethical stitching in Portugal – all with full traceability. It’s fashion with a conscience, and it’s built to last. Think slow style that actually (cat)walks the talk.

NUMBER OF THE DAY

How much an antique “vampire hunting kit” costs.

📵 Social media reform

Some governments are pushing for limits or bans for children using social media platforms.

What are the proposed changes?
In response to concerns over children's mental health and access to inappropriate content, France’s President Emmanuel Macron has suggested banning social media for kids under 15. The government wants to enforce tougher age checks, including using ID or facial recognition, to keep kids off social media until they’re older. The UK is looking to limit app use to a couple of hours a day and set nighttime curfews. Meanwhile, Australia has already approved a ban for platforms to allow users under 16, with big fines if they don’t comply.

Why now?
Awareness around kids’ mental health and online safety is growing fast. Parents, teachers, and policymakers want to make sure children aren’t overwhelmed or harmed by their lives online. But this isn’t just about banning. It’s about finding ways to make the internet a safer place for young people to learn, connect, and grow.

Is banning the answer?
That’s where opinions differ. Some say strict rules and limits are the best way to protect kids. Others think teaching children how to use social media wisely, along with parental guidance, is a better long-term solution. After all, social media isn’t going away, and kids need tools and skills to navigate it safely.

The takeaway.
There’s no perfect solution yet, but awareness is there. Parents are starting petitions to ban phones in local schools, teachers are calling for clearer guidelines, and some kids themselves say they feel better when they get a break from their screens. Whether through new laws, school policies, or just more open conversations at home, there’s growing momentum towards childhoods offline.

🇬🇧🇺🇸 Trade tariffs: US President Donald Trump has signed off on some parts of the UK-US tariffs deal at the G7 summit in Canada.

  • The bigger story: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has negotiated a reduced 10% levy on car imports, whilst the aerospace sector will be exempt. For now, a 25% tariff remains on steel and aluminium, which is still half of that imposed on other countries, but talks continue to get this down to zero too. The deal means lower costs for business and consumers, boosting trade and economic growth.

🌼 Booming blooms: Plants are experiencing longer growing seasons in cities due to artificial light and warmer surroundings, known as urban heat islands.

🧑‍⚖️ Law change: The government has announced plans to scrap laws criminalising homelessness from spring 2026, which have been in place across England and Wales for 200 years.

🥼 Health innovation: A new treatment for leukaemia has been praised as a “milestone era of personalised medicine” after successful trials, with researchers hoping to bring it into more widespread use.

🌬️ Wind walkers: Dutch artist Theo Jansen uses wind power in a very creative way – his skeletal “beasts” walk across beaches in the Netherlands using a sail, and they look just as futuristic as they sound.

📷 Spectacular seas: The winners of the United Nations’ World Oceans Day photo competition have been announced – I love the underwater seascapes.

🍷 Sunny sips: When the sun shines Brits love a glass of rosé, with sales rising 150% as soon as temperatures hit 20°C. Turns out maybe we don’t always have to be relaxing in the Italian Riviera to enjoy it!

Sea Sisters – tinned fish, but make it fancy 🎣

Come for: The UK's first craft cannery since the 1940s, based in Dorset. They're preserving British fish like Cornish hake and Norfolk whelks in small batches, creating gourmet conservas that bring a taste of the coast to your pantry.

Stay for: Elevating your snack game, perfect for impromptu picnics, fancy toast toppings, or impressing guests with minimal effort.
