WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

💸 Your money diaries, Hungary’s new era, rewilding the UK’s ocean + Shakespeare mystery solved

Here’s a cool idea from Berlin: tourists can now get free entry to some attractions by doing small good deeds like picking up litter. It’s all part of a new scheme encouraging visitors to give something back while they explore. Keeping the city clean and getting people a bit more involved in the places they’re visiting… we love to see it!

NUMBER OF THE DAY

1996

The year a free exhibition at the Barbican is celebrating.

Welcome to Money Archetypes – a new series lifting the lid on the often mysterious world of money. Each week, someone from our community shares their real-life numbers, habits and goals – the good, the messy and everything in between – because there’s no one “right” way to do finances. We’ve partnered with Maike Currie, an advocate for improving women’s financial resilience and VP Personal Finance at PensionBee, to help us out. Anything discussed should not be regarded as financial advice and as always with investing, your capital is at risk.

Maike Currie is VP Personal Finance at PensionBee, a leading online pension provider in the UK. She’s also an author, award-winning financial commentator and advocate for improving women’s financial resilience (basically, she knows her sh*t and we’re lucky to have her!). With more than two decades’ experience in markets, money, investments and pensions, she has held senior roles across the investment industry. Maike specialises in helping women take control of their financial futures, with a particular focus on pensions, investing and closing the gender wealth gap.

P.S. Intrigued by how much income your pension could generate in retirement? Use this handy calculator to work it out.

🇭🇺 Hungary’s centre party has secured a supermajority, signalling a sweeping mandate to overhaul the country’s political system after years of one-party dominance.

  • The bigger story: The result gives Peter Magyar a strong mandate as he prepares to take office, after his party’s landslide victory ended Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. Magyar’s Tisza party won 141 out of 199 seats, a final tally higher than earlier estimates, underlining the scale of the political shift. With a two-thirds supermajority, the party now has the numbers to push through major reforms, including rolling back laws introduced under Orbán and launching a wide-ranging anti-corruption drive.

There’s something quietly addictive about the idea of spending an afternoon making slightly wonky (but very charming) little pots, and this pottery kit feels like the easiest way to dip a toe in without committing to a full ceramics era. You get a generous lump of air-dry clay and everything you need to shape, paint and proudly display your creations a couple of days later. And even if you only try it once, it’s a lovely excuse to slow down and make something that’s entirely, imperfectly yours.
