🛒 Cost competition

Supermarkets in the UK are facing a price war.

Hold up. What’s a price war?
It’s a situation where rival companies compete with each other by reducing their prices in order to have the biggest market share and attract the most customers.

What’s the story?
An increasing number of UK supermarkets are announcing price reductions in response to Asda saying it’s going ahead with its biggest cost-cutting in 25 years. Back in March, Asda lowered the price of 1,500 items by as much as 45%. Since then, Tesco has announced similar price cutting – taking an “active approach” with weekly reductions, and Sainsbury’s said it plans to continue investing in keeping costs down. Plus, price matching with discount chains like Aldi has become commonplace, and they have once again been crowned the cheapest supermarket by a recent analysis

How will this affect the grocery sector?
While the move will likely result in stronger sales volumes, it is expected to be “counterbalanced” by lower profits. This is also due to the rise in employer National Insurance Contributions and minimum wages putting more pressure on operations. However, it could be “good news” for shoppers as food inflation and household bills continue to rise, according to a spokesperson from consumer organisation Which?. To better help consumers know where to shop, comparison sites like Trolley can be useful to determine what’s best for your budget.
