💌 We need to think differently about “imposter syndrome”

Read in 5m 48s ∙ Listening to Harry Styles

Happy Friday - Calypso here!

In my work as a self-discovery coach, I’m often asked for advice on overcoming imposter syndrome. I’ll be honest, I really don’t love the term - mainly because we only ever seem to hear about it in relation to women. Society never seems to question whether men are ready for their next career step in quite the same way!

That said, I’m fully aware that most of us feel fear as well as excitement when we step outside our comfort zones. That’s why this week, I’ve pulled together a guide to help you think differently about imposter syndrome, and it features my top tips for overcoming self-doubt.

But before that, scroll down for the usual mix of headlines, culture recs, featured jobs and lots more.

Big love,

Why we should think differently about imposter syndrome

“By refusing to use the phrase imposter syndrome, we can remove some of the power it has over us.

This is definitely not to say that growth doesn’t feel scary. It’s completely natural to feel fear as well as excitement when stepping outside our comfort zone - which is why this piece is all about reframing some of the most common self-doubts that crop up when we grow.”

Read on for these reframes 👈 (so you can stop feeling like you just ‘got lucky’, or worrying that you’re going to get ‘found out’).

📰 Read: Charles Duhigg on How to Have More Meaningful Conversations. In this piece for TIME, Duhigg argues that good communicators aren’t born “more charismatic or extroverted” than the rest of us. It’s a fascinating read, especially given how much of our day-to-day communication is now done through a screen.

🎧 Listen to: The Moth, a storytelling podcast with a twist. Each episode is a real-life story told by an ordinary person - under a spotlight, live and without notes to a roomful of strangers. It’s been going for over 25 years and for good reason - it’s funny, moving and always unexpected.

📺 Watch: Leena Norms, a poet, producer and YouTuber whose immensely watchable and funny video essays cover everything from second-hand fashion to surviving your twenties. In yesterday’s edition, we reported on how six dating app users are taking Match Group - which owns Tinder and Hinge - to court in the US. Their claim? That the apps use game-like features to foster addiction, pushing users to pay for pricey subscriptions. We wanted to know whether you think the apps are addictive - and it seems like there’s a pretty love-hate relationship going on…

On a completely unrelated note, we wanted to settle a long-running debate: should you always take your shoes off indoors?

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ No, it's not always necessary (36%)

Indoor footwear etiquette is, it seems, still very much up for debate.
