11 new sites including wetlands in Belgium and a mangrove forest in The Gambia have been recognised by the UN as biosphere reserves. There are now 759 of these sites around the world – an area nearly the size of Australia – and these places protect biodiversity, combat climate change and prioritise sustainable development initiatives.
