🪸 Reef rewards

Artificial reefs are gaining ground to create more sanctuaries for marine life.

What are they?
Artificial reefs are man-made structures that provide new habitats for sea life and enhance biodiversity. Commonly, these are shipwrecks, but could also be oil and gas platforms, lighthouses, or even smaller-scale structures made from natural materials like bamboo. They aim to mimic the benefits of natural reefs, such as protecting coastlines from erosion, filtering pollutants from ocean water and acting as nurseries for fish.

Why are you telling me this now?
Earlier this year, plans to sink a historic ship off the coast of Florida were announced to create the world’s largest man-made reef. The ship will undergo 18 months of preparation, at an estimated cost of $10m, to remove technical components, furnishings and any other potential contaminants.

It comes at a time when coral reefs are declining, with a report finding 14% of the world’s coral has been lost over the last 15 years. This has led to increased public awareness of the effects of environmental change on our oceans and interest in conservation efforts, with some now even taking trips specifically to resorts where they can plant new coral gardens.

Anything else I should know?
Artificial reefs can become havens for divers and tourists to explore marine life, which brings economic benefits to the local community and supports further restoration projects. Whilst there are clear benefits of creating new habits for corals, fish and other aquatic life to thrive in these environments, conservationists stress more needs to be done to address the root cause of declining coral reefs worldwide. This is being tackled via a global fund of $25m which aims to restore over 3m hectares of the world’s coral reefs by 2030.
