As a long-time city-dweller with rural roots, I was overjoyed when my attempts to grow tomatoes on my tiny balcony finally bore fruit this summer 🍅. As well as creating something delicious from scratch, I found the whole process to be seriously mindful - and it helped me reconnect with the nature around me.

🇷🇺 Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who led a failed uprising against Putin in June, is presumed to have died following a plane crash on Wednesday. UK defence sources told the BBC that Russia’s FSB intelligence agency is likely to be responsible for the incident.

🇯🇵 Japan began releasing treated radioactive water from the ruined Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, prompting China to immediately ban all seafood products from the country.

🇺🇸 Donald Trump surrendered at a jail in Georgia on Thursday night, on charges of plotting to overturn the state's 2020 election results. He was processed like any ordinary criminal defendant - and had his mugshot taken.

CULTURE

⚽ FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales after he kissed captain Jennifer Hermoso on the lips at the Women’s World Cup Final. She later said that she “did not enjoy” it.

🪧 The UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled that OnlyFans account billboards which appeared in four London locations in June and July were “not overtly sexual”, following complaints that they were inappropriate.

🎙️ The Rolling Stones appeared to announce a new album with an ad for a fictional glass repair business in a local newspaper. While the band has made no official comment, NME has broken down the clues.

WORK & INNOVATION

🚀 India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon’s south pole. Scientists believe that this unexplored region could contain water - and Chandrayaan-3 will begin gathering crucial data.

👩‍⚕️ Surgeons in Oxford said that the UK’s first womb transplant had been a “massive success”. The 17-hour surgery took place in February, but was first reported on this week. A second womb transplant is scheduled for autumn.

📱 Meta launched a web version of Threads. The app - designed to rival Twitter, now rebranded as X - experienced an initial flurry of signups when it launched in July, but engagement has fallen in recent weeks.

UPLIFTING STUFF

🇳🇿 The wētāpunga, one of the world’s largest insects, is making a comeback in New Zealand’s forests after almost 200 years.

🥇 Two athletes decided to share their pole vault gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest. After two and a half hours, America’s Katie Moon and Australia’s Nina Kennedy ultimately decided against a jump-off.

🐺 A new pack of grey wolves was discovered by researchers in California’s Sierra Nevada, several hundred miles away from any other known population of the endangered species.
