The Know Daily - Friday 26 July 2024

💌 Your Friday roundup is here

Read in 5m 36s ∙ Listening to Gwen Stefani and Anderson .Paak

Dear readers,

The sun is shining, the Olympics are starting today, there literally couldn’t be a better start to the weekend. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ll be tuning in for the opening ceremony tonight, a glass of rosé in hand. I usually stay away from televised sports, but there’s just something so magical about the Olympics. Hands down, my fave event is gymnastics. I’m so excited to watch Simone Biles compete again (and she’ll no doubt crush it as per usual).

That being said, we have a special treat for you in this week’s edition: a roundup of the Olympics, complete with all the good news, goss and debates that’s come from the Games.

Happy Friday!

Love,
Hanna

The Paris 2024 opening ceremony takes place tonight in the French capital, marking the official start of the Games. From now until 11 August, Paris and 17 other sites will host over 300 events in 32 sports. And one to watch: breaking is making its Olympic debut 👀

The Olympic Games are one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and for the next 17 days all eyes will be on Paris. It’s a celebration of athleticism and comradeship, and organisers hope that this year’s Games will “unite the world in peaceful competition” and “leave a lasting social legacy”.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing, however. Paris residents have expressed anger at the enormous sum spent on hosting the Games (some even threatened to poo in the Seine river in protest 🫣). And up until very recently, it was unclear whether the Seine would be clean enough for Olympians to swim in (as of now, a massive clean-up operation appears to have paid off). On top of all that, there has been much debate over which athletes from which countries should and shouldn’t be allowed to compete.

But as the LA Times pointed out, the Games often generate controversy in the weeks and months beforehand – and then comes the opening ceremony. Once the competition begins, focus shifts towards “gold medals and world records”. And there’s already a lot of good news coming out of the Games…

👁️ The opening ceremony has been billed by organisers as “the most spectacular and accessible” in Olympic history.

🏅 Paris 2024 has achieved total gender parity, with the same number of male and female athletes competing.

🍃 Organisers hope that this year’s Games will be the greenest on record, pledging to halve the carbon footprint of the event.

👶 Paris 2024 is introducing new measures to be more inclusive to mothers – for example, the Olympic Village will feature a nursery and a dedicated breastfeeding space.

The opening ceremony will be shown live on the BBC from 5:45pm tonight. Enjoy!
