🌎 The UK’s new climate taskforce

Climate change is often talked about as an environmental issue, but the UK government is now considering how it affects national security too by launching a special taskforce.

Tell me more.
The UK's first-ever Climate Security Taskforce brings together experts from science, the military and public policy to look at how climate change could affect the country's security in the years ahead. The group won't be writing new laws or running projects itself. Instead, it'll act as an independent advisory panel, giving ministers advice on how the UK can better prepare for climate-related risks.

The government says climate change and nature loss can have effects that go beyond warmer temperatures. More frequent extreme weather, pressure on food supplies, energy security and global instability could all have an impact on life in the UK.

So what will the taskforce actually do?
It will look at where the UK's current plans around national security could be stronger, identify the biggest risks to it from climate change and review what's already being done to tackle it. The taskforce will also consider how climate events overseas could affect the UK through things like supply chains, food and water security, migration, insurance costs and international tensions.

When will we know if it's made a difference?
Not straight away. The taskforce's first job is to gather evidence and produce recommendations, rather than taking direct action. The government hasn't set a date for publishing its findings, so it'll likely be some time before we know what changes, if any, are made. Ultimately, any recommendations will only have an impact if ministers decide to adopt them.

How does this fit into wider UK climate policy?
The new taskforce is part of a wider effort to help the UK plan ahead. Alongside cutting greenhouse gas emissions, there's growing focus from the government on helping the UK adapt to the effects of climate change that are already happening. That includes improving flood defences, protecting water supplies, planting trees in urban areas to help with overheating and preparing public services for more extreme weather.
