🆔 Digital ID

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has put digital ID back on the table, with Labour saying it’s looking at how a national scheme might work.

What would a digital ID look like?
Think of it as a one-stop way to prove who you are – without rummaging through passports, bills or driving licences every time. The government says it would be directly on your own device, just like contactless payment cards or the NHS App. You would use that same digital ID whenever you need to prove who you are. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told Sky News that all UK citizens will have to have a digital ID, but she said it is "entirely their choice" if people want to use them.

The idea isn’t entirely new as other countries have been using digital ID for years, including Estonia, Australia, Denmark and India. Plus, back in the early 2000s the UK government tried to introduce voluntary digital ID, but it was later scrapped.

What’s brought this on?
The introduction of digital ID would be part of wider government plans to tackle illegal migration, through proving your right to live and work in the UK. Plus, identity fraud is rising, and services from banking to healthcare are under pressure to be faster and more secure. Ministers see digital ID as a way to make identity checks more consistent and efficient across the board.

Are there any benefits?
The government says that a digital ID could:

  • Save time on admin like opening a bank account or renting a flat.

  • Cut down on fraud if the technology is robust.

  • Offer easier options for people who struggle with traditional documents.

  • Reduce the need to hand over the same information repeatedly.

The other side.
There are still important details to settle. Protecting personal data securely is one of the top concerns. Access is another issue, since not everyone has a smartphone or reliable internet. And while the idea is to simplify life, it depends on how smoothly the scheme is designed and rolled out. The government hasn’t set all the details yet, so for now it’s more of a “watch this space” than a done deal.

🙋‍♀️ TRIVIA TIME

Where is the coolest neighbourhood in the world, according to Time Out?

A) Greenwich Village, New York
B) Jimbōchō, Tokyo
C) Soho, London

Got it? Answer at the bottom.

💰 Money Monday: Switching your current account could give your savings a lift with banks offering incentives and better interest rates to new customers.

  • The bigger story: Several UK banks now offer cash bonuses – up to £200 – for customers who switch their main current account. Along with that, the switch often comes with access to high-interest savings accounts (some yielding 5% to 7%), letting your money work harder. Just be sure to read the fine print as some have individual requirements. Check here for tips on comparing providers and see which is best for you.

🏆 Reigning Red Roses: England defeated Canada at Twickenham, winning the Women's Rugby World Cup for a third time.

🛍️ Boosting boroughs: Seven London boroughs and two neighbourhoods will receive millions of pounds from the government to revive high streets and public spaces.

📱 Is it a vibe?: Meta AI has launched a new feed of AI-generated videos called Vibes, designed to encourage users to remix those that come from “creators and communities”.

🦍 Growing gorillas: A booming tourist economy in Uganda is helping to boost the conservation of endangered mountain gorillas.

💘 The heart wants what it wants: Congrats to the happy couple! Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have tied the knot in a private event over the weekend, according to her recent post.

Freezing our herbs (really!) 🌿

Come for: A genius way to rescue all the herbs you buy thinking you’ll use, then forget – just chop, pack into ice cube trays with olive oil (or water if you prefer) and freeze.

Stay for: Having ready-to-go herb “cubes” to drop straight into soups, pastas, or one-pan meals. I particularly love that there’s no waste, no wilted herbs… just instant flavour all year round 😋
