✈️ How new airline rules affect you, No 10 in the North, serving up tennis fashion + a chilly fossil find
A huge congratulations to The Box in Plymouth 🎉 The museum has just been named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, with judges praising its community-first approach. Since opening in 2020, it’s welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors and worked with 89% of Plymouth’s schools – proving museums can be so much more than just places to look at things!

How many dams have been removed in Europe over the last year, opening up waterways to help wildlife thrive.
✈️ New EU air passenger rights
Flying to Europe could soon get a little easier, with the EU agreeing on a major update to air passenger rights.
Tell me more.
The European Parliament and EU member states have reached a provisional agreement on the biggest overhaul of passenger rights in more than 20 years. According to Politico, the changes are designed to make compensation rules clearer, strengthen passenger protections and make it easier to enforce the rules across Europe. But the agreement still needs final approval before it becomes law.
Will this affect UK passengers?
Yes, in many cases. The changes would apply when flying from an EU airport on any airline, or when flying into the EU on an EU-based airline. Flights leaving the UK would still be covered by the UK's separate passenger rights rules too.
OK, so what’s changing?
Some of the biggest changes include:
🧳 Passengers will be able to bring a piece of hand luggage onboard free of charge, on top of the small under-the-seat bag.
👨👩👧 Children under 14 would have the right to sit next to their accompanying adult for free.
♿ Extra protections would apply to people with disabilities, reduced mobility and pregnant passengers.
💳 Airlines would have to show the full ticket price, including luggage costs, earlier in the booking process.
🎫 Airlines would no longer be allowed to charge for correcting simple spelling mistakes on tickets or for printing a boarding pass after check-in.
What about delays and cancellations?
Most of the existing protections would stay in place. If your flight is cancelled, delayed by more than three hours or you're denied boarding (unless it's due to exceptional circumstances like severe weather), you could still be entitled to compensation or a replacement flight. The new rules would also require airlines to: provide food and drinks during long delays, cover hotel accommodation, explain how to claim compensation within four days of your journey ending and respond to claims within 30 days.
So are the new rules in place?
Not yet. The agreement still needs to be formally approved by both the European Parliament and EU member states, with a vote anticipated in July. If it's signed off, the new rules are expected to come into force in the second half of 2027 and will apply across the EU and cover flights within Europe, as well as many flights to and from the EU operated by EU airlines.

🏛️ A new “No 10 in the North” has been proposed by Labour leadership frontrunner Andy Burnham as part of his vision to "rewire" how Britain is governed.
The bigger story: In his first major policy speech since launching his leadership bid, Burnham said "Westminster is broken" and unveiled plans for an extended Downing Street operation based in Manchester to drive devolution across the UK. He also promised a major council house building programme, greater support for manufacturing, more investment in science and technology, and a rethink of education to create more routes into skilled jobs beyond university. Burnham said his aim is to spread economic growth beyond London and give more power to regions and nations.

I was on holiday last week and, without fail, I always make sure I pack a backgammon set. There’s something so nice about playing a few games over breakfast or while waiting for dinner… even if it occasionally leads to the odd competitive row! This personalised canvas backgammon set is so pretty and would also make such a lovely gift for the gal who loves to globetrot – it’s practical, looks really chic, and you can personalise it to make it feel that bit more special.
