WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

🇬🇧 Human rights vote
🌊 Long-lost letters

The Scottish Highlands have welcomed a family of beavers into the wild, marking a major landmark for nature in the region 🦫 Nestled in Glen Affric, these remarkable creatures – once extinct in Scotland for 400 years – are now returning to help create wetlands, boost biodiversity and support the ecosystem.

NUMBER OF THE DAY

255 years

The age of England’s oldest working windmill (and it still makes flour!).

🗞️ In case you missed it

Missed some of the top stories this month? Don’t worry – here’s a roundup of the headlines that had everyone buzzing in our editorial meetings.

Editor’s picks

🇮🇸 Iceland’s women’s strike: It’s been 50 years since the country’s groundbreaking women’s strike. On 24 October 1975, around 90% of women took a day off work and household duties to show the power of their labour, sparking the 1976 Gender Equality Act and paving the way for the world’s first democratically elected female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. Follow-up strikes, including one in 2023, keep progress moving and today Iceland shines as a global leader in gender equality, with women thriving across government, business and society.

🏛️ MP pay: Since the 2010 expenses scandal, MPs’ salaries have been set by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), which recently ran a citizens’ forum to hear public views. After learning about MPs’ long hours, workload and responsibilities, most participants agreed pay is fair – while still needing to stay realistic for everyday taxpayers. IPSA plans to give people even more say in the future, showing transparency and collaboration at the heart of how MPs are paid.

📦 Packaging tax: When we asked if any of you think packaging tax is a good idea, 66% gave it a hearty yes. But the rest of you feel the system is quite flawed, or are just a bit unsure.

“The principle is definitely right and hopefully it will lead to less packaging overall and more environmentally-friendly options being preferred.”

“I think there should be a directive where packaging should only be sustainable and recycled in place with a date say of 2028 for companies to source and implement it.”

👩‍💻 Career reinvention: We dug into career reinvention and you guys had a lot to say. In fact, 96% of you (yep, that’s nearly everyone!) said you have or would like to reinvent your career at some point:

“I used to work in film and TV as a freelance hair and makeup artist, it was the best job but very hard with long hours, often being away from home and then spending my down time worrying when the next job would be. I’m now working 9-5 in an office and enjoying my evenings and weekends with friends and family – keeping it simple for my mental health.”

“I made the move away from HR a few years back. I studied sustainability at uni and set myself up as a freelancer. But then I made the switch back to a company where I feel appreciated.”

“I would love to but I’m terrified of making that big a change and the possible loss of security that comes with it.”

🚶🏼‍♀️Right to roam: Some MP’s are calling for unrestricted walking, wild camping and swimming to become a legal right for all people to enjoy the English countryside. 69% of you agree that you think it’s a fab idea, although not everyone is sold…

“Generally I think yes, as most people will behave responsibly/considerately but with everything, a few people will spoil it for everyone else by not doing so.”

“There are a great deal of deep-seated landowning issues that need to be addressed. Previous generations have worked hard to own land and it is their property. All issues mentioned in the concerned section need to be addressed very carefully.”

“We should be able to roam where we please but people must follow the rules and treat our countryside with the respect it deserves and needs.”

🙋‍♀️ TRIVIA TIME

Which US TV show is moving to London for its next season?

A) Only Murders in the Building
B) Grey’s Anatomy
C) The Last of Us

Got it? Answer at the bottom.

🇬🇧 ECHR vote: MPs have rejected Nigel Farage’s proposal for the UK to begin withdrawing from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), voting it down by 154 to 96.

  • The bigger story: The ECHR, based in Strasbourg, oversees human rights protections across Europe and has long been a point of debate in UK politics. Farage argued that leaving would give Britain more control over its laws, while opponents – including Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey – said the court is vital for safeguarding basic rights and keeping the UK aligned with democratic standards.

🌊 Long-lost letters: Messages in a bottle written by two soldiers in 1916 have been found more than a 100 years later on Australia’s south-western coast.

🤖 Bot barriers: US senators have put forward the “GUARD Act” which would require users to verify their age before using an AI chatbot.

👟 Speedy sneakers: Nike is building what it calls the “electric bike for feet” (you read that right!).

🌱 Messy play: In Finland, kindergartens are exposing children to more of the outdoors and have found changes to their health, demonstrating how crucial biodiversity is to wellbeing.

🍻 Slainte!: This drinks company has announced where and when it will be setting up its huge new home in London.

👻 No place I’d rather (not) be: This writer took a trip to the UK’s most haunted village… rather you than me!

Come for: The ultimate three-ingredient snack hack – sweet, chewy dates filled with creamy almond butter and dipped in melted chocolate.

Stay for: The fact they taste exactly like mini Snickers bars (for my fellow nut-free huns, I’m told this is actually completely true!). Keep a stash in your freezer and thank me later.
