A vast expanse of blanket bog in the far north of Scotland has been granted world heritage status – an especially “rare honour” for a landscape, according to the BBC. The Flow Country is more than worthy of the honour, though. The peat it contains stores approximately 400m tonnes of carbon, and it’s home to a range of wonderful species including orchids and rare birds.
